Wetenschap/Mens: Cannabis kan helpen bij pruritus (jeuk) volgens een case report

Onderzoekers van de afdeling Dermatologie van de Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, VS, meldden een geval van succesvol gebruik van medicinale cannabis voor de behandeling van chronische behandelingsresistente pruritus. Zij merkten op dat “chronische pruritus een invaliderend symptoom is dat gepaard gaat met talrijke dermatologische, neurologische en systemische ziekten. Het is vaak resistent tegen behandeling en kan leiden tot een ernstige vermindering van de kwaliteit van leven”.

Een vrouw die al 10 jaar leed aan pruritus, ervoer een aanzienlijke en aanhoudende verbetering na het inhaleren van cannabis en het gebruik van cannabistincturen. Een maat voor de kwaliteit van leven verbeterde van 17 naar 1 in de loop van 20 maanden cannabisbehandeling. Ze was in staat om te stoppen met alle andere medicatie, die niet erg effectief was. De auteurs concludeerden dat “dit case report benadrukt dat medische cannabis een potentiële behandeling is voor chronische pruritus.”

Science/Human: Cannabis may be helpful in pruritus according to a case report

Investigators of the Department of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA, reported a case of successful use of medical cannabis for treating chronic treatment resistant pruritus. They noted that “chronic pruritus is a debilitating symptom that is associated with numerous dermatologic, neurologic, and systemic diseases. It is often resistant to treatment and can cause a severe reduction in quality of life.”

A woman, who suffered from pruritus for 10 years, experienced significant and sustained improvement after the inhalation of cannabis and the use of cannabis tinctures. A measure for quality of life improved from 17 to 1 over the course of 20 months of cannabis treatment. She was able to stop all other medication, which was not very effective. Authors concluded that “this case report highlights that medical marijuana is a potential treatment for chronic pruritus.”
